REDC Default Solutions to Pay $50,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Lawsuit

An Irvine, Calif.-based company will pay $50,000 and furnish other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged REDC Default Solutions, LLC with unlawfully failing to accommodate a disabled worker at its Plano, Texas location.

Judgment Against AutoZone Affirmed in EEOC Disability Discrimination Case

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit has affirmed a $424,000 judgment (including $9,000 in costs) against AutoZone, Inc. for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today.  The decision also upholds an injunction requiring the national auto parts retailer to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with physical disabilities in all of its stores in central Illinois.

Reed Pierce's Pays $20,000 to Settle  EEOC Pregnancy Discrimination Suit

Reed Pierce's Sportsman's Grille, doing business as Reed Pierce's bar in Byram, Miss., will pay $20,000 and furnish other relief to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that a female server was removed from the weekly schedule and fired because of her pregnancy.

EEOC Sues Florida Construction Security Services for Disability Discrimination and Retaliation

A Florida full-service asset protection security firm violated federal law by firing an employee because of his disability, a missing arm, and then punishing him for complaining about the discrimination, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today.  The EEOC had charged that Florida Commercial Security Services, Corp., doing business as Florida Construction Security Services (FCSS), terminated a guard for failing to wear his prosthetic arm, even though it was unnecessary, and then refused to assign him to another position because he filed a discrimination charge with the EEOC.

Jury Rules for EEOC in Sexual Harassment Case Against the Finish Line

A U.S. District Court Jury has found that a 38-year-old general manager at The Finish Line, Inc.'s Cool Springs Galleria store in Franklin, Tenn., subjected three female subordinates, who were 16 and 17 at the time, to severe sexual harassment, the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today.  The Finish Line is an Indianapolis-based company that sells athletic footwear, apparel and accessories.

Kintetsu International Express (USA), Inc. – a leading company in worldwide corporate travel – will pay $77,500 to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that Kintetsu harassed and discriminated against a tour coordinator in Maui because of her malignant rheumatoid arthritis.  The lawsuit also alleged the company unlawfully retaliated against the tour coordinator's co-worker for engaging in protected activities.

America's Thrift Stores of Alabama, Inc. will pay $50,000 and furnish other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that the company violated federal law by refusing to provide an employee with a reasonable accommodation and subsequently firing her because of her disability, degenerative joint disease. America's Thrift buys new and used items from local charities and department stores to sell to the public, and operates 17 stores in five states.

EEOC Reports Nearly 100,000 Job Bias Charges in Fiscal Year 2012

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today announced that it received 99,412 private sector workplace discrimination charges during fiscal year 2012, down slightly from the previous year. The year-end data also show that retaliation (37,836), race (33,512) and sex discrimination (30,356), which includes allegations of sexual harassment and pregnancy were, respectively, the most frequently filed charges. The fiscal year runs Oct. 1 to Sept. 30.  The fiscal year 2012 enforcement and litigation statistics, which include trend data, are available on the EEOC's website at http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/statistics/enforcement/index.cfm.

Metro Special Police & Security Services, Inc., a Charlotte-based provider of private security and public safety services, violated federal law by subjecting male employees to sexual harassment, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today.  The EEOC also charged the company with unlawfully suspending, demoting and/or discharging some male employees for complaining about sexual harassment or filing discrimination charges with the EEOC.

Sixth Circuit Issues Second Victory to EEOC in Sex Discrimination Case Against Cintas Corp.

In a second victory for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit rejected Cintas Corporation's petition to reconsider its earlier ruling that the EEOC was wrongly denied permission to litigate a lawsuit alleging Cintas engaged in hiring discrimination against a class of women in Michigan.  The court's one-page order, issued Jan. 15, 2013, indicated that no judge had requested a vote on Cintas' suggestion for full court review.  The case will now return to the district court for further proceedings.
