Abercrombie & Fitch Settles Two Pending EEOC Religious Discrimination Suits

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has agreed to pay $71,000 and to change its policies to settle two separate religious discrimination lawsuits on behalf of Muslim teens wearing hijabs (religious headscarves), the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today.  This settlement follows last week's ruling finding Abercrombie liable for religious discrimination in one case, and an April 2013 ruling dismissing its undue hardship claims in the other suit.

EEOC Sues Cleaning Authority of Plainfield For Disability Harassment

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit today alleging that Mont Brook, Inc., doing business as The Cleaning Authority of Plainfield, violated federal civil rights laws by harassing an employee because of her disability and unlawfully inquiring about her disability.  The defendant, based in Plainfield, Ill., provides residential house cleaning services in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, according to its website.

EEOC's San Francisco Office and Ecuadorian Consulate Sign Historic Outreach Agreement

The San Francisco District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Consulate of Ecuador in San Francisco today.  The agreement establishes a partnership between the agency and consulate to inform Ecuadorian nationals working in the United States about their employment rights and the federal laws that protect workers from discrimination, regardless of documentation status.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 1-2 p.m. ET, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (@EEOC_OFO) and the U.S. Department of Labor (@USDOL) will host in a live "Tweet Chat" in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Rehabilitation Act makes it illegal to discriminate against a qualified employee or applicant with a disability in the federal government and in federal contracts and subcontracts.

In a lawsuit filed today in federal court, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged that Midway Neurological & Rehabilitation Center LLC, based in Bridgeview, Ill., violated federal law by discriminating against a pregnant social worker, first by cutting her hours because of her pregnancy, and then by firing her in retaliation for her filing a charge with EEOC.
