Tips for Youth @ Work

  • Be Prepared! Know your rights and responsibilities as an employee or manager.
  • Report any unfair or harassing treatment.
    • If you feel comfortable, tell the person harassing you to stop.
    • Report the behavior to your manager or another manager in your company.
    • Talk to your parents, teachers, or another adult.
    • File a complaint with the EEOC.
  • If you need a workplace change because of your religious beliefs, disability, or pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, ask. Be prepared to provide your employer with enough information about your request so that it can determine how to best help you.
  • Be sensitive to others and act professionally.
    • Treat your co-workers the way you want to be treated.
    • Don't assume your behavior is ok just because no one has objected.
    • If someone indicates that your behavior is unwanted or objectionable, stop doing it and don't do it again.
    • Never assume that friendliness equals sexual interest.
  • Keep records including witness names, telephone numbers and addresses. Document how you were treated as an employee or how you treated individuals as a manager.
  • Know the deadlines for reporting discrimination and harassment to the EEOC.
  • Remember, you cannot legally be punished or fired for reporting job discrimination.
